Even though you might be used to using only window air conditioning units, it is very important to make sure that you are doing all that you can to move up to a central air unit. With the window units, you are going to deal with a lot of hassle. You have to install and remove each of the air conditioners each season and you have to deal with a lot of condensation that will appear because of these units. With these units, you are also never going to be able to experience one steady temperature throughout the house. Even within in the same room, it might be freezing next to the window and "comfortable" on the opposite side of the room. This can make living comfortably a little difficult.
There is also the fact that you have to have a place to store these units when they are not in use and that they are subject to breaking easily. When they break or begin to not work as efficiently as they should, you are going to have to spend money to repair or replace them. Sure, repairs might be needed to central air units every once in a while, but generally not nearly as much as the window units.
