Applying The Basics Of Refrigeration

Once you are familiar with the basics of refrigeration, as an HVAC technician, you will be required to apply your knowledge to real world situations.  Every situation you find will be a little bit different than the last one.  Here is a situation that might happen to you.

While working for your company, you receive a call that one of the customer’s has contacted the office and their air conditioning unit is not cooling their house.  The temperature outside is 101 degrees.  You are sent to the house to check it out.

Upon arrival to the customer’s, you see that the unit outside seems to be running.  Once you get inside the house though, you find that it’s 89 degrees and very humid.  Air is blowing from the registers but it’s not blowing cool air.

You check the filter and it’s slightly dirty but not too bad.  It appears that the blower might need to be cleaned too.  You check the evaporator coil and see that it is clean so you know the filter is doing its job.  For preventative maintenance you change the filter and clean the blower anyways.

You go back outside and see that the condenser unit is clogged with grass clippings and fuzz from a cottonwood tree.  You begin to clean the condenser and recheck it and find that it starts working well.

The customer asks what the problem was.  What is your answer?

Was caused the problem here?  The dirty filter; dirty condenser or the dirty blower?
